Wind energy is the conversion of kinetic energy (wind power) into mechanical power. A generator is used to convert mechanical power into electricity.
Wind power uses the kinetic energy of the atmosphere, created by the rotation of the earth, heat of the sun, the cooling of the oceans and icecaps, and temperature gradients between land and sea.
Wind turbines are commonly located on hilltops or near the ocean. In some countries, wind turbines have also been built in the ocean, either floating on the surface or using giant pylons extending to the sea floor.
Wind turbines come in various shapes, although the windmill is the most common. Some international companies are also exploring ‘airborne wind’, which works like a giant kite.
Wind energy is the fastest growing renewable energy source for electricity generation in Australia.
