Amazon is an American ecommerce and cloud computing company based in Seattle. Over 22 years, Amazon has moved from being an online bookstore, into an ecommerce platform that sells clothes, furniture, home goods, electronics and now perishables and even services.

The warehouse and logistics capability that Amazon developed is now available to anyone. Amazon Web Services which grew from the company's own infrastructure needs, now powers companies like Airbnb and Netflix.

Amazon has warehouses worldwide featuring high tech robots working alongside human workers.

Retailers recognise the threat - citing competition from Amazon way ahead of other issues such as chains, finding employees and rising rents. Amazon does not have a significant storefront presence. A traditional store requires far more employees. 

Amazon engages third-party contractors and companies for tasks like deliveries. Hiring contractual workers helps the company keep its costs in check. 

Amazon's logistics infrastructure also aids small business retailers and manufacturers. Listing their products on Amazon helps increase customer reach, with delivery outsourced.

Amazon also offers cloud computing services, storage and databases on an as-needed basis.
